President Donald Trump has agreed to a 30-day pause on tariffs against Mexico and Canada to allow further negotiations on border security and drug trafficking. Initially, the administration had announced tariffs of 25% on Canadian and Mexican goods, with a lower 10% rate on Canadian energy products, as well as a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The pause aims to de-escalate tensions and provide room for diplomatic discussions. There has been no pause announced thus far on the 10% tariffs on goods that are imported from China.
On February 1, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10% tariff on all imports from China, citing the country’s failure to curb the export of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals to the United States. The executive order, issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, aims to pressure China into taking decisive action against the production and distribution of these harmful substances. President Trump’s spokesperson said that President Trump will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week regarding the tariffs.
