On Wednesday, August 11th, Ningbo Meidong Container Terminal Corp, has suspended all inbound and lift-off services beginning at 3:30am local time due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Twenty-eight container vessels are queuing outside Ningbo Zhoushan port.
Jiand Yipeng, deputy general manager of Ningbo Zhuoshan Port said, “Meidong firm immediately stopped all operations and shut down the port area after the COVID-19 test of the staff showed positive.”
Ningbo Zhoushan port, China’s second-largest container port by handling volume after Shanghai, handled almost 19 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in the first seven months, up 17.1% year-on-year.
The employee who tested positive for COVID-19 at Meidong port received two shots of Sinovac’s SVA.O COVID-19 vaccine in January and March this year, according to an official from the Ningbo city government.
Ningbo was recently affected by a typhoon in late July, leading to slow productivity and temporary port congestion.
Since July 20th, community-spread infections have been confirmed in roughly half of China’s provinces, initiating mass testing operations and localized lockdowns. We will continue to monitor the situation and update accordingly.
